Information:
I have a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Lehigh University and thousands of hours of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels, including students who hate and/or fear math. While I don't believe there are any "magic cures" for math/test anxiety, I DO believe strongly that with patience and dedication, students with these problems CAN improve and successfully complete their mathematics coursework. My tutoring philosophy is centered around respect for and patience with the student, encouragement, commitment to providing the clearest explanations possible, and kind but firm expectations that the student will make every effort to get the most out of the tutoring experience.

During the summer, many parents of middle and high school students hire me to review math from the previous year or get a head start on next year's math with their students. This can be an effective way to help students who tend to struggle with math. I also offer private customized SAT preparation (see below) and help for students in summer school classes (including those at the college level.)

Upon request, I am happy to offer a resume and references of other families I have worked with in the past.

Rates:

$32/hour for tutoring sessions in which the student comes to me
$36/hour for sessions in which I drive up to 10 miles one way to meet the student
$40/hour for sessions in which I drive up to 15 miles one way to meet the student

Volume Discount:
Every fifth hour of tutoring that a student receives will be $20 off! This effectively reduces the above tutoring rates to $28/$32/$36, as long as the student has been tutored for 5, 10, 15, etc. hours.

I believe these rates are comparable to other tutors in the area with similar qualifications and experience; please understand that my rates have to remain at a certain level to cover self-employment tax and the rising costs of gasoline. If you would like to receive tutoring but finances present a problem, please get in touch with me anyway- I do not want financial hardship to prevent students from getting help, so we may be able to work something out (ie sharing the tutoring session and cost with another student.)

Locations:
My home is conveniently located near Route 22 and Route 145 (MacArthur Rd) in Whitehall. There are also occasionally opportunities to meet me at other locations (Lehigh University, Whitehall Public Library, Lehigh Carbon Community College) at other times during the week, depending on my schedule, for the $32 rate. Unless you are referred to me by someone I already know, I prefer to meet students for the first time in a public place (ie library) for a mutual feeling of security.

Hours:
I have daytime, evening, and weekend hours available. Availability changes weekly; scheduling can be done week-by-week or by setting up a recurring appointment. Please note that I will be out of town and thus unavailable for tutoring July 3rd-12th.

Cancellations:
Occasionally it is necessary for a student to cancel or reschedule a tutoring appointment due to unforeseen circumstances; there is certainly no charge for cancelled appointments, but I do appreciate 24 hours notice whenever possible (by email or phone- note that I choose to not have a cell phone, and my home phone is frequently busy, so email is best.) Of course in the rare event that I have to cancel an appointment, I will provide as much notice as possible. Students who repeatedly fail to show up for appointments may be dropped from tutoring.

Money-Back Guarantee:
My goal is to provide you with productive and worthwhile tutoring sessions- NOT just to take your money. With this in mind, if after our first tutoring session or any subsequent tutoring session you feel that you have not received a good value for your money, you will owe nothing for that hour of tutoring. This enables you to try an hour of tutoring risk-free! If you do at any point decide that you would like to make use of this Guarantee, we will discontinue tutoring, and as a professional courtesy I will be happy to refer you to other math tutors in the area. I will also provide referrals in the rare event that I feel unable to assist with your particular coursework or otherwise feel unqualified to help with your particular needs.

SAT Preparation:
I am pleased to provide customized private preparation for the SAT Math section at a fraction of the cost of commercial test prep companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review. Preparation begins with a diagnostic test to assess the student's weak points, followed by a thorough review of the math tested on the exam, and extensive opportunities to take practice tests and go over questions. After each tutoring session I will provide the student with homework to complete before the next tutoring session- please understand that the effectiveness of tutoring depends on the student's willingness to consistently complete the work assigned between tutoring sessions. Parents are a crucial factor in making sure that their students are keeping up with the work assigned. Early in the tutoring program I will discuss with the parent(s) and student the importance of these assignments to make sure all expectations are clear.
